A president is the leader of a democratic state.

Kind of like... kings? Kings are rulers in a monarchical setting.

Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. So the President is elected by the people. He or she just doesn't assume the position.

Well, back in Ferelden we had a King. Except the King was killed by darkspawn when his general betrayed him and left him for dead. Then the Hero of Ferelden stopped the Blight and I haven't really been paying attention since. Before he died, King Cailan was... charming? Nice? Kind of a dick.

In Kirkwall, the city I live in now, we have a Viscount. Viscount Dumar is... well, he's pleasant enough. I get on better with his son, honestly, but Seamus is kind of odd too. Very pretty though.

I... suppose? He's the same as a Teryn or an Arl, in terms of power. The Free Marches are different, they work in forms of city states. Kirkwall and Kaiten have Viscounts while places like Starkhaven for instance have a Prince. Tantervale has a Lord, Wycome a Duke. It's all a bit of a mess.
