[ things have been kind of weird when merlin got back. athena's put herself in this box of negativity and has been having difficulty getting out of it despite merlin making a promise. it's why everything she does or says when she's with him seems a bit... reserved now, as if she's distanced herself from him a bit. she's trying, though!

she just feels that she doesn't deserve to be close to him now after snapping at him the way she did when he got back. that she just has to win him back again. it's a stupid way of thinking, but it's what she's come up with.

it's a few hours after dinner time now (9:30), but not too late. she spent the afternoon making (not baking!) a cake following an easy recipe she got from one of the kitchen staff at the cosplay cafe. the cake should be hard enough to eat by now so she takes it out of the fridge and puts it in a red box, and ties a ribbon around it.

she's also bought a present for him. she isn't even sure if he's seen something like it before, but it's a good way of documenting things and getting it printed out right away. hopefully he'll like it. it's in a bigger box along with a couple of boxes of film, too. just so he doesn't have to buy film first!

once the two packages are put in a bigger bag, she's out the door and into the elevator.

hopefully he isn't already sleeping or is out, or even busy. ding dong! ]

[ It's fine because while he's tried to slip back into things like they're normal, he hasn't found it easy either. He doesn't have any pessimistic thoughts or anything, but there are a lot of memories to sort through and some are... less than pleasant. He is at home after just finishing dinner late (he's been working to make up for lost time okok) when she buzzes the door. When he answers, he's still dressed from work. He looks a bit surprised to see her, but quickly moves aside to let her in. ]

I didn't realise you were coming over.

[ Thankfully the apartment is always clean tbh. ]

Do you want a drink or anything?

[ While he doesn't outright ask what those boxes are, he definitely looks curious. ]

Oh, um-- [ this is awkward. she just holds out the bag for him to see what's inside. she doesn't even take a step in yet. ] Sorry, I should have called. I got excited.

[ orz ]

I was hoping to have a bit of your time. [ when did she become so polite... ] I got you something.

[ He didn't even say it was a bad thing... which is why he ends up feeling awkward when she doesn't step inside and he moved out of the way for her already. ]

...Then come in?

[ It stings a little when she acts differently too, when she lingers at the door like she isn't welcome there anymore. She is, always will be. He even picks at the door frame from the side of it, shifting his eyes away now that she's being awkward.

[ it's with him actually telling her to come in that she enters, but she doesn't go all the way in and instead waits for him to close the door before walking in further. ]

I told you I'd make you a cake, right? I also got you a present.

[ she just wants to celebrate his birthday :< ]

[ Well it slides back into place easily enough, but he can't bring himself to be as excited anymore after her being awkward to begin with... What a cycle. ]

You did. [ He indicates towards the kitchen and starts walking there. ] We can have it in here. Do you want tea or anything to go with it? I'm just doing the dishes then we can sit down, okay?

[ Before Shigeru has a Heart Attack. ]

[ she sets the bag on the counter when she follows him. ]

Just water's fine. And do you want some help?

[ He glances back at her before starting the water into the sink, pouring in a little washing up liquid. ]

It's alright, there isn't much it's just... [ Shrugs. ] You know. There's probably a fresh bottle in the fridge you can take.

[ He'll be having tea, so... ]

[ well, alright. she gets a bottle of water from the fridge before she just hangs back by the counter. ]

[ It only takes a few minutes, especially as he isn't drying them, to finish the dishes. Then he fills the kettle and switches that on. ]

Not bad, just long. I mean I was at 3 different places from early morning. What about you?

It was okay.

[ she has new jobs now too. she helps rei out sometimes at the advertising firm she works at sometimes and is a model for kashuu's fashion thing! she hasn't done much in both yet, though. ]

Tiring, but fun. [ oh dammit... she clicks her tongue when she remembers. ] I should have brought you flowers too.

[ After putting in the tea (loose and in a separate bag that England helped him buy) he turns to her, hand reaching out for hers. ]

No need... I have my flower right here. [ Woah... It's said gently, but that's more because he's entwining their fingers together too. ]

she moves closer to him when she takes his hand and rests her head on his chest. ]

Belated happy birthday, you.

[ Because despite being Useless he's Smooth...

He tucks her in against himself then, kissing her forehead. ]

Thank you. [ A beat, then: ] I hope you're going to feed me some of the cake as well, then.

[ he's so warm... it makes her relax a little into him. ]

Okay. Only because we're celebrating. You're out of birthday wishes now, though.

[ His hand shifts to rub her back, eyes watching the kettle boil the water. ]

And here I was hoping I could ask for a pony. [ well then ]

But you already have a horse, don't you?

[ in b4 liah says she forgot about it ]

A horse and a pony are different.

[ Because that explains everything [lonely] ]

[ that actually makes her laugh. she looks up at him now, a small smile on her face. ]

What's the difference between the two?

[ she's not stupid she knows but she wants to hear it from him. ]

[ he just raises his eyebrows at her. ]

[ Like he's giving her more than that??? ]

[ her eyes narrow at him and she uses her free hand to show the difference between their heights. ]

Yes, you are. You're really tall.

[ His mouth twists, trying to hold back a laugh as he reaches for her wrist to rub the skin gently. ]

You're just really short.

[ ???????? WOW? ]

[ WHAT THE HELL THAT IS SUPER RUDE!! she puffs her cheeks and stomps on the ground. ]
